Nissan Sport Concept to Debut at NY Auto Show The Nissan Sport Concept, which will make its public world debut at the 2005 New York International Auto Show, is the latest in a series of dynamic performance/youth concept vehicles following the Nissan Actic and Nissan AZEAL concepts. The Sport Concept is a dynamic three-door hatchback with a dramatic four-seat interior. It offers the look and feel of a sports tuner car, yet is conceived as an affordable, attainable vehicle for buyers entering the new car market for the first time. “The story behind the development of the Sport Concept, AZEAL and Actic is that Nissan is thinking big about the small car segment,” said Jack Collins, vice president, product planning, Nissan North America, Inc. “With these three design explorations, we’re focusing on how we can bring Nissan’s heritage of innovation, sportiness and driving pleasure to a category of vehicles that traditionally lack design excitement and strong visual appeal.” “The Nissan Sport Concept, like the AZEAL and Actic before it, is first and foremost a showcase of future thinking, yet it is also a car that would be right at home in Nissan showrooms in the not-too-distant future,” said Collins. “Nissan has a strong global lineup of compact enthusiast vehicles, including the March, Cube, Tiida, Note and Sentra SE-R, and, in the Nissan 350Z, one of the world’s most desirable sports cars. The new Nissan Sport Concept fuses the best of both worlds.” The exterior of the Nissan Sport Concept combines shapes and forms that are both geometrical and mechanical in feel, creating a sense of acceleration and kinetic energy. The dynamic fender forms give the special Pearl White-painted body a look of pure, almost animal performance. Its athletic roofline is marked by a large rear roof-mounted spoiler, while its bold surface composition, robust fender character lines, deep front spoiler and side sills, and large wheels and tires provide an animated, video game-like stance. The body construction utilizes both metal and carbon-fiber composite components. The 20-inch six-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels feature a machined and lustrous paint finish surface treatment. The Sport Concept’s headlights and rear combination lights utilize small lamps with multi-layered reflectors. “The Nissan Sport Concept may be small dimensionally but it is large in its dynamic energy – aggressive, highly functional and definitely street-wise,” said Collins. The interior of the Sport Concept is designed to fit four adults comfortably, yet with an emphasis on the front two seats – with every element of the cockpit existing to enhance the vehicle’s engaging driving experience. The deep, body-wrapping front bucket seats are covered in Wolf Gray leather with double-layered pearl suede inserts and feature formed head restraints and integrated 4-point seat belts. The instrument panel includes integrated tachometer and gauges and a distinctive center cluster. The Sport Concept interior also offers a three-spoke steering wheel and solid-appearance center console with the emergency brake lever integrated into the console lid. Independent rear seats, also covered in a combination of leather and suede, offer true four-place seating with integrated 4-point seat belts. Other rear passenger features include center console-mounted support grips and a large blue-cone speaker and woofer located in the rear parcel shelf. “The Nissan Sport Concept is as close to performance art for the street as you can get – modern, cool, ready to run,” said Collins. “When it comes to the next wave of small car design, a SHIFT_ is about to be made. And Nissan is making it.” About the Nissan AZEAL and Nissan Actic The Nissan AZEAL Coupe Concept, which debuted at the 2005 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2005, is a fresh interpretation of the classic compact sports coupe - an affordable, performance-oriented entry-level coupe with the style and personality to match the lifestyles of its young, active target buyers. The AZEAL design exercise is the first concept car created by Nissan Design America’s (NDA) new studio in Farmington Hills, Mich. AZEAL features an aggressive body design with wide fender flares, short overhangs and a sharply sloped rear roofline with integrated active airfoil. The interior combines a dark, industrial metallic instrument panel appearance contrasted by Wasabi Chartreuse fabric seats and an open greenhouse with glass-panel roof. It rides on 19-inch wheels and tires. The Nissan Actic, shown for the first time at the 2004 North American International Auto Show, is a "content rich" design exercise created by the original NDA studio in La Jolla, Calif. It combines a simple, confident exterior form with flexible, modular seating and a unique “digital canvas” interior. Actic makes a visionary statement from Nissan about how vehicle owners will approach technology in the future. In place of traditional content-heavy vehicle control systems that become outdated immediately, Actic's handheld "key fob"-based Information Technology (IT) system allows the user to “grow” the interface with infinite flexibility and updateability. Other Actic innovations include dual sliding side doors, a "cross trainer"-style wheel and tire design (patent pending) with tread-wrapped 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, and a versatile matching trailer with inflatable walls that converts to a comfortable sleeping space for three.

New Peugeot 308 Shows Its Face There's something about to hatch at Peugeot! In this week's issue of Auto Express you can see the first pictures of the all-new 308, the replacement for the 307. Based on top-secret insider information from parent company PSA, they are bound to send shockwaves through the French maker's top brass. Why? Because they reveal exactly how the car will look when it hits showrooms towards the end of 2006. The most obvious element of our exclusive images is how the 308 gains Peugeot's new family look, with a nose similar to that of the recently introduced 407. The steeply raked headlamps are based on those of the 206-based H2O concept shown at the Paris Motor Show two years ago. But in profile, the car is leaner and lower than the 307, answering the biggest criticism levelled at the styling of the current model. Our pictures show a five-door version of the 308, and according to our sources, the three-door will be completely different. It will get an even more streamlined roof and a coupé-like rear, similar to that of the new three-door Vauxhall Astra. In addition, Estate, SW and Coupé Cabriolet models will appear later, with the first two planned for 2007 and the CC for 2008. An MPV is also expected. Distinctive traits on both three and five-door cars will include Peugeot's trademark 'wide-mouthed' grille and thick A-pillars. Inside, the newcomers will have a simple yet effective cabin layout. Controls will be kept to a minimum to free up storage space, while the dash is expected to be trimmed in a suede-like fabric to match the external colour scheme. With the rear wheels as far back as possible, it means buyers should get plenty of rear legroom. The current 307's engine range is relatively modern, so few changes are likely when the 308 debuts. The base 307's 1.4-litre unit will be dropped for a 90bhp direct-injection 1.6 petrol powerplant, but the 138bhp and 180bhp 2.0 engines will remain more or less unchanged. Diesel options will include an entry-level 75bhp 1.4-litre engine, along with 90 and 110bhp 1.6 choices. The range-topping oil-burner will be powered by a 136bhp 2.0 unit, and is expected to be offered in sporty GTi guise alongside more conventional trims. The car is expected to benefit from Peugeot's traditionally impressive handling characteristics. It will be based on a new platform - effectively a shortened version of the 407's - and will come with an advanced drive-by-wire braking system. The set-up links middle pedal inputs to the discs and pads by computer, doing away with the need for any kind of cable connection. With the car aimed at small family hatchback rivals, safety is a key factor in the 308's marketing strategy. Multiple airbags will be standard, along with a host of electronic stability aids to keep the car on the straight and narrow. Although official launch details are still under wraps, we understand the 308 has been pencilled in for a world debut at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show. It will arrive in European showrooms that summer, and UK dealers can expect deliveries in the autumn. Prices will be similar to those of the 307.

AutoExpress New Mondeo's In The Family Way Say goodbye to the Mundano - and hello to Ford's new range of cutting-edge family cars. As you read this, Auto Express can reveal that the blue oval's design staff are putting the final touches to an exciting four-model line-up to replace today's three-strong Mondeo family. We've discovered that the firm will replace the range with a sharply styled saloon and liftback, a Vauxhall Signum-style estate-cum-hatch, an all-road MAV (or multi activity vehicle) and a modern interpretation of the Galaxy people carrier, tipped to be christened the E-MAX. The move is intended to drive the Mondeo away from its traditional 'repmobile' reput*tion. Key rivals, according to Ford, will include the Alfa Romeo 156 and Honda's Accord. However, the biggest surprise is that the new family will be based on an updated version of Volvo's S60 platform. This means the range will benefit from top-level safety as well as the option of four-wheel drive. The saloon, hatchback and MPV will be built at Ford's Cologne plant in Germany. However, current plans would see the MAV made at Jaguar's Halewood factory on Merseyside. Sources have pointed out the new 2005 Land Rover Freelander will also be produced there, using the same Volvo-derived platform. The first cars to arrive - the MAV and new Sports Estate - will debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 2006, and are expected to hit the road around six months later. But the Mondeo project actually began in summer 2002, when Ford hired a London-based design consultancy to conduct market research. Since then, top brass have given the green light to an audacious plan to build a more radical range of family cars and make a determined drive upmarket. At a recent customer clinic in Cologne, potential customers were shown the new Mondeo saloon and Sports Estate, alongside more upmarket rivals such as the Alfa 156. One source told Auto Express that the Mondeo's recent facelift was the beginning of the move into a more premium class of the market. "We improved the comfort and made the car more refined," he explained. "We wanted to mix premium quality and affordability." Our source then revealed plans for a Volvo XC90-style variant. "The sector is set to broaden to include an MAV model," he told us. This move is thought to be inspired by the success Ford has enjoyed in the American market with the recently revealed 500 executive saloon and Freestyle off-roader. The new Mondeo family will feature far more striking and assertive styling, according to a senior design source who recently spoke to Auto Express. He also told us he thought the Focus RS "was one of best design jobs of recent years", and hinted that its wide track and pronounced wheelarches could become a Ford signature. "We want the cars to look much bolder, and offer a clear link between models," he added. What's more, he pointed out that for the past few years the company had emphasised good driving dynamics as a Ford characteristic, but that now "there was room for another area: design". According to our company insider, a future Mondeo estate would have a shorter rear overhang, be wider, bigger inside, sit lower, look more sleek and have a clever new tailgate design. "Is it possible to combine the seat flexibility of a Signum with high style?" he asked, suggesting this is an issue that Ford is currently working on. Auto Express has also discovered that the re-invention of the seven-seat Galaxy, the E-MAX, has been entrusted to a radical British designer with a track record of innovation. "He's a family man who is genuinely excited to be penning his ideal family car," explained a source. We understand that the design work is still ongoing, but that the new Galaxy will retain the one-box shape of the original model. However, it will be sleeker and more sophisticated, just as the Focus C-MAX has become in the sector below. It's also thought that the new platform will offer higher-than-normal driving positions in the saloon and hatch. As the chassis is Volvo-derived, there's said to be space for the new V6 turbodiesel Ford developed in conjunction with PSA Peugeot Citroen. But whether Volvo will allow Ford to use its five-cylinder petrol and diesel engines remains a mystery. Either way, the next-generation 2.0-litre turbodiesels are expected to be the most popular choice. Six-speed manual gearboxes and five-ratio autos will be the mainstream transmission options, and some sources say a new CVT transmission will also be offered. Four-wheel drive is likely to be optional on the MPV and Sports Estate and standard on the MAV. There's no news yet on whether the all-roader will seat five or seven - but a seven-seater would clash with the E-MAX. The new models will be crucial to Ford's European arm, as sales of traditional Mondeo-type cars are falling each year. That's because today's buyer - who needs space for a family - is increasingly considering mini-MPVs, compact off-roaders and even models from premium brands such as BMW, Mercedes and Audi. The result is that the market for cars positioned between the VW Golf at one end and BMW 3-Series at the other is shrinking rapidly - as reflected by the struggling Mondeo class. And one last decision for Ford: with the new range so radically different, is it time to ditch the name? We hear that some within the firm may be pushing for the Mondeo badge to be dropped...

The smart utility vehicle (suv), scheduled for the year 2006, will bear the name smart formore. This fourth smart model range will also mark the company's entrance into the US market. With the introduction of the new model, suited to all road and driving conditions, smart will be represented in the world's largest automotive market for the first time. The four-wheel drive smart formore will also be launched in the company's other core markets at the same time. From the beginning of 2006 the smart formore will be built in the DaimlerChrysler plant in Juiz de Fora, Brazil. The plant has a capacity of 60,000 cars per annum. In a full sales year, smart plans to sell half of these in the USA and half in their other core markets. “With the smart formore we will be applying the typical smart characteristics of innovation, functionality and joie de vivre to the SUV sector. The new smart model will be a distinctive vehicle, unique in the market - so unique that we translate `suv' as smart utility vehicle,“ explained Andreas Renschler, President of smart gmbh. “The smart formore will provide a driving experience loaded with adrenaline - off road as well as on-, expressive design and a high utility value. It is the ideal model to launch the smart brand in the US market.” With the name smart formore, smart is following the naming logic which it began with the four-seater forfour. The basic principle of this logic is to give names which have a direct connection to the uses of the vehicle concerned. Therefore from 2006 the smart formore will be added to the range of new smart model names, the smart fortwo coupé, smart fortwo cabrio and smart forfour. The smart roadster and smart roadster-coupé are to retain their original, well-known names, since these already describe what all smart models have to offer - sheer driving pleasure.

Un poco moña el coche, no? Saludos

Saludos...
