VW Fox Peeper & CrossFox

Publicaciones recomendadas

Little more than one month ago, Volkswagen revealed their Fox. At the time, it was slated to be a South-American domestic market product to replace the Gol, and to keep the lineup in ship shape. Since this time, however, Volkswagen have decided that the Polo-based Fox will replace Volkswagen's enrty-level city car, the Lupo come 2005. Shown here are two variants of the city car, in sporty as well as a slightly tougher offroader theme.

Fox Pepper - the hottest Fox on the market. Powered by 105 hp 1.6 engine. The real GTI?

The first of the two new model additions is the CrossFox. Similar to the Polo Fun that was introduced at this year's Frankfurt show, the Crossfox is a slightly tougher version of the cute Fox. Raised by 46 mm, the CrossFox perches well above the road, with the grille guard and extra spotlights leading the way. Silver brush trim brightens up the scratch-resistant matte-black plastic front and rear bumpers, while on the car's tailgate rests a full-size spare tire. It seems as if the CrossFox is a reincarnation of the infamous Mk.II Golf Country. Power comes from either a 1.0 liter inline four, or a larger 1.6 liter engine.

Double the groundclearance, the CrossFox is the baby brother to the Polo Fun.

On the other side of things, appealing to a much broader crowd is the Fox Pepper. The sportiest of the Fox family, it's powered by a 1.6 liter 16 valve engine that makes an easy-revving 105 horsepower. But aside from having the grunt, Volkswagen have gussied it up in the looks department. A special front air dam, rear valance and side skirts give the car a more aggressive look, and they're also painted in body colour. If that weren't enough, the tiny car has been fitted with 215/40 R 17 high performance on Golf R32 lookalike wheels.

Well equipped for a basic city car. Note Pepper's dash-top instruments and alloy trim.

Size notwithstanding (it is 3.84 metres long, after all) both models of Fox has been furnished quite lavishly. Curvy, and crafted from the textured 'soft-feel' plastics, it wraps around the single-gauge instrument cluster. The simple center console features two knobs for heating and ventilation, as opposed to the typical three. Plenty of storage space is to be found inside the Fox with trays stretching across the steering column's base, and deep cubbyholes on the dash as well as along the passenger's side, in place of a glove box.

Crossfox - to challenge Rover Streetwise?

The theme chosen for the Crossfox is that of nature, and it's aptly reflect in the choice of trim. Black leather buckets are trimmed with olive inserts to give the car an earthy look. The sportier Fox Pepper makes use of two-toned white and black buckets with a sports steering wheel. Three individual white-faced gauges rest atop the dashboard in a similar fashion to the Smart Roadster, completing the visual happenings of the engine. Aluminum pedals, and an aluminum shifter knob have also been thrown into the Pepper's package.
